Summary |
When the Bedford County Triennial tax assessment was made in 1808, Thomas Jefferson was President. There were only 15 stars on the United States flag, although Ohio had been admitted as the 17th state. While taxes were paid every year, the triennial assessment included information on land ownership, special buildings, and occupations. Some of the terms on the 1808 tax may not be familiar to us. Unskilled young men were classified as laborers. Unusual spellings of names could be the fault of the tax acessor, although many immigrants later altered the spelling of their name after decades of settlement. |
