Summary |
"Early in the 18th century, a small band of Mennonites set out from Philadelphia following a winding Indian trail. Most traveled on foot, though a few led horses or pulled two-wheeled carts carrying their posessions. Through miles of thick forest they passed, to the banks of Pequea Creek. This was the heart of an area known as "Conestogo," after the Conestogo Indians. Here, they saw rolling hills covered with oak, chestnut, poplar and walnut trees. Between the hills were marshy meadows watered by streams and springs. According to tradition, the group looked for the tallest oak trees, where they would be sure to find good soil. There, the Mennonites took refuge until their first log cabins were completed." |
